I am a PPE gradudate. I successfully got a place of MPhil in Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin. I would say the PPE programme plays an essential role in helping me apply to a research programme.
The PPE programme has indeed greatly improved my philosophical thinking ability. By studying formal logic, I learned some basic methods for analysing philosophical arguments and propositions. Courses on ethics and political theory introduced contemporary debates. I was happy to take part in the discussions, which enhanced my critical thinking and writing skills. The PPE programme provides a smooth curve to help students study moral and political philosophy, from the basic level to the advanced level. My favourite point is that it offers considerable freedom in selecting courses. All students can register for three advanced-level courses, which are more challenging and interest-oriented.
If you plan to apply to a research programme connected to philosophy, you should first prepare high-quality writing samples. It means you should put more effort into writing essays. Teachers in the department of philosophy are keen about providing practical writing suggestions. Second, contact teachers who are willing to write a reference for you. However, you shouldn’t assume professors are glad to help you write a reference if you make little contribution to the class. Third, if you do not have a philosophy degree like me, please ensure that the philosophy courses listed on your transcript make up the majority.
